As previously noted, Dickens’s story has been adapted in play and film form many times. You’ll watch one film version and compare it to the text. The 1910 silent film A Christmas Carol was directed by J. Searle Dawley. As with all silent films, the story is told through the actors’ gestures and miming ability, as well as through title cards. These on-screen text cards narrate the story or give snippets of dialogue. Watch this silent film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Now think about the similarities and differences between Dickens’s story and Dawley’s film adaptation. Fill in the table by identifying one difference and one similarity between the text and film versions.
