The human heart beats an estimated 2.0-2.5 billion times in a lifetime. Unlike the brain, which requires a constant feed of glucose to satisfy its energy needs, the heart is relatively plastic in its energy use, burning glucose, other carbs or even fats to meet its constant thirst for energy. Explain why this is important in the scheme of life. Why is the Mediterranean diet considered better for supplying needed nutrients to the heart and noted to reduce heart disease?
