Louis XVI belongs to Bourburn Dynasty. He was the 16th Ruler of the Dynasty. He married to Marie Antoinette,the Princess of Austria. He was an Autocratic ruler with Unlimited Power. When he become the king of France, he got empty treasury. The Reason Behind were as follows :-

  • The cost of maintenance of Immense Palace like Versailles.

  • Long years of war had drained the financial Resources of France. France helped 13 American colonies to get independence from their common enemy Britian.

  • The war added up to 2 Billion Livre on dept. The payer of state card impose 10% interest on loans.

  • The Cost of maintenance of huge Army, Officials, his court and the country.

This was one of the major cause of French revolution. To overcome this financial crisis. Louis XIV tends to increase the taxes. The People of France were unhappy with this decision. Soon after, with other circumstances leading to the great French Revolution.

Some of the other causes that lead to French Revolution.

  • Political Cause - The ineffecient rule of Louis XIV. He was an Autocratic ruler with Unlimited Power. The People were unhappy in his rule.

  • Social Cause - French Society was divided into three section Nobles,clergy and common People. Only Third estates pay taxes. First and second estates were exempted from paying taxes and have all Privilliges.

  • Role of Middle class - In the beginning of 19th century. The strong middle class emerged who earn their wealth througj trade. They beleived that no body should be Priviligeed by birth.

  • Role of Philosophar - They Propogate the idea of having equality in society through their Speeches, books etc. The people were inspired to go against the divine and absolute rights if monarch.

To put it simply, France was in debt and out of money to pay it off. This lead to the king increasing taxes on the lower class while making the upper class not pay taxes. This causes extreme taxation on the poor.
