Dreams
by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

What type of symbol is the broken-winged bird in this poem?

Person. I'm not sure about what the classification types mean, but there is definitely personification used with the bird representation, so you could infer that the author is personifying because the bird symbolizes a person.
