Usages of simple present tense

  • To express present affairs/permanent or long lasting situation

For eg: He speaks English very well.

  • To express habitual actions/ repeated actions/daily routine

For eg: When do you usually have breakfast?

  • To express truth and facts/ saying and proverb

For eg: Slow and steady wins the race

  • To express fixed time table/scheduled future actions.

For eg: The match starts at 9 o' clock.

  • We often use these adverbs of time in simple present tense:
  1. always
  2. seldom
  3. day
  4. usually
  5. occasionally
  6. now-a-days
  7. hardly
  8. rarely
  9. sometimes
  10. never
  11. generally
  12. frequently

  14. everyday

For example: She generally forgets duty.

  • To express likes,dislikes/verbs of sensation/emotional states

  • To express things happening now/at the moment

  • To express future planned arrangements

for eg: Is he visiting his parents next week?

  • Expressions (Stop,Listen,Look, Don't make a noise, Don't cross the road,Hurry up, Don't disturb) which draw attention

For eg: Don't disturb me I am reading.

  • Gradual change

for eg: The children are growing fast

  • After but today/but now

for eg: He always play tennis but today he is playing football.
