Let the number of cans of juice be j and let the number of cans of pop be buys be p.

This means that:

p = 1 +2j/5

Make j subject of formula:

p - 1 = 2j/5

=> 2j = 5p - 5

j = ½(5p - 5)

p = 3 (from the question)

Therefore:

j = ½(5 * 3 - 5) = ½(15 - 5)

j = ½ * 10 = 5

Mike buys 5 cans of juice per week.
