Two frisbees (circular flying discs: small and large) are used for two games. In game 1, the large disc is used and has a diameter of 27.3 cm. In game 2, the small disc is used and has a diameter of 22.5. The circumference of the flying disc for the first game is how many centimeters greater than the circumference of the flying disc used for the second game, to the nearest centimeter? Use 3.14 for \piπ.

Explanation:

Circumference of a circle = πd (where d is the diameter)

Large disc

  • diameter (d) = 27.3 cm
  • π = 3.14

⇒ circumference = 3.14 × 27.3 = 85.722 cm

Small disc

  • diameter (d) = 22.5 cm
  • π = 3.14

⇒ circumference = 3.14 × 22.5 = 70.65 cm

Difference between circumferences

= circumference of large disc - circumference of small disc

= 85.722 - 70.65

= 15.072

= 15 cm (to the nearest centimeter)
