Answer: 17

Pro tip: 3/4/5, 5/12/13 and 8/15/17 are the first three Pythagorean Triples on the list and teachers like to use them for problems. The multiples also come up, like 6/8/10. Learn these and save yourself some calculation down the road.

Let's do it like they want

a² + b² = c²

8² + 15² = c²

64 + 225 = c²

289 = c²

√289 = √c²

17 = c

Answer:

See the explanation.

Explanation:

The Pythagorean theorem states that a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where a and b are the legs of the triangle and c is the hypotenuse (diagonal, longest side) of the triangle.

We can see that the legs are labeled 15 (blue) and 8 (red). Substitute that into the equation.

(8)^2 + (15) ^2 = c^2

From there, we can simplify and solve for c.

64 + 225 = c^2. Add.

289 = c^2. Take the square root.

c = 17.

I hope this helps!
