We must apply the pythagorean theorem to solve.

C is the hypotenuse aka the longest side.

Formula: a^2 + b^2 = c^2

a^2 + 10^2 = 17^2

a^2 + 100 = 289

Subtract 100 from both sides.

a^2 = 189

Square root of 189 is approximately 13.74.
