1) Multiply each term of the top equation by two.

2(x) + 2(y) = 2(7)

2x + 2y = 14

2) Use elimination to get rid of the y's

2x + 2y = 14

-(5x + 2y = 8)

Translates to...

2x + 2y = 14

+ (-5x - 2y = -8)

= -3x = 6

3) Solve for x by dividing each side of the equation by -3.


(-3x)/(-3) = (6)/(-3)

x = -2

4) Plug in x to find the y-value

x + y = 7

-2 + y = 7

-2 + 2 + y = 7 + 2

y = 9
