Explanation:

The slope is defined as deltaY/deltaX, in other words, how much does the Y change for every unit of X.

You can figure this out using any two points on the line.

Seeing that (0,1) and (4,-2) are convenient points on the line, we can see that deltaY = 1 - -2 = -3 and deltaX = 4, since the Y goes from +1 to -2 (3 down) and X goes from 0 to 4 (4 to the right).

Divide those, and get -3/4.

Try it with another set of points: (-4,4) and (4,-2).

deltaY = 4 - -2 = -6

deltaX = 4 - -4 = 8

Divide those, and get -6/8 = -3/4. The answer is the same.
