Total number of student that took part in the survey = 273

number of student that chose the tiger to be the new school mascot = a

number of student that chose the bulldog to be the new school mascot = 4a

number of student that chose the Lion to be the new school mascot = 2a

Therefore,

a + 4a + 2a = 273

sum all the coefficient of a

7a = 273

divide both sides by 7

a = 273/7

a = 39

The number of student that chose lion = 2a = 2 × 39 = 78
