A man came to the King and asked, "King, let me pick an apple from your garden." The King agreed to the request so the man went to the garden and saw that it was fenced off with three fences and that there was a gate in each fence. A guard stood next to each gate. "The King has allowed me to pick an apple from the garden," said the man to the first guard. "Go ahead," answered the guard, "but when you exit give me half of all the apples that you have, plus one more." The other two guards each said the same thing to the man. How many apples should the man pick in order to have one apple left for himself after he gives each of the guards all the apples they demanded?
