A bunch of Ashland families have been helping out by making 2 different types of masks. It costs the family $1.70 to buy the supplies to make a mask with elastics and $1.30 to buy the supplies to make a mask that ties. They are selling the masks with elastics for $5.60 and the masks that tie for $5.40. In April, the family spent $37.90 on materials for both types of masks. They sold the masks for a total of $147.20, which they will donate to the Ashland Emergency Fund. How many masks with elastics did they make & sell in April?

Answer:

They made and sold 7 masks with elastics in the month of April.

They made and sold 20 masks that tie in the month of April.

Explanation:

Let the number of masks with elastic made and sold be x

And the number of masks that tie made and sold be y

Since the price of making one mask with elastic is $1.70

The total amount spent on making x masks with elastic = 1.7x

The price of making one mask that ties is $1.30

The total amount spent on making the masks that tie = 1.3y

Total cost price = 1.7x + 1.3y = 37.90 (eqn 1)

They are selling the masks with elastics for $5.60 and the masks that tie for $5.40.

Total revenue made from selling x masks with elastic = 5.6x

Total revenue made from selling y masks that tie = 5.4y

Total revenue = 5.6x + 5.4y = 147.20 (eqn 2)

Writing the two equations together

1.7x + 1.3y = 37.9

5.6x + 5.4y = 147.2

Solving the simultaneous equation

x = 7 and y = 20

Hence, they made and sold 7 masks with elastics and 20 masks that tie in the month of April.

Hope this Helps!!!
