A small country emits 93,000 kilotons of carbon dioxide per year. In a recent global agreement, the country agreed to cut its carbon emissions by 4% per year for the next 10 years. In the first year of the agreement, the country will keep its emissions at 93,000 kilotons and the emissions will decrease 4% in each successive year. How many total kilotons of carbon dioxide would the country emit over the course of the 10 year period, to the nearest whole number?

Answer:

779264 k-tons

Explanation:

First year ====> no change

then each of the next 9 years decrease by 4 % ( leaving 96%)

this is a geometric sequence with

r = .96 and a1 = 93000 and n = 10 terms

sum of sequence = a1 (1-r^n) / ( 1-r) = 779264 kilotons
