Answer:

Add 1 to each side

Multiply each side by 4

Take the square root of each side

Subtract 5 from each side

Combine terms

Explanation:

1/4(x+5)^2-1=3

Add 1 to each side

1/4(x+5)^2-1+1=3+1

1/4(x+5)^2=4

Multiply each side by 4

4*1/4(x+5)^2=4*4

(x+5)^2=16

Take the square root of each side

sqrt((x+5)^2)=±sqrt(16)

x+5 = ±4

Subtract 5 from each side

x+5-5 = -5 ±4

x = -5 ±4

Combine terms

x = -5+4 x = -5-4

x = -1 x = -9
