Jada added two like fractions and then wrote the answer in simplest form. The answer was 1/3. One of the addends was 3/12 . What was the other addends?

Explanation:

The two like fractions can be set as x and y (just to use two variables).

One of them is
(3)/(12), though, so we can set one of the variables equal to that value (I'm just going to make
y=(3)/(12), it doesn't matter which variable you use).

We also know that adding the two variables gives us
(1)/(3) so now we can make an equation.


x+y=(1)/(3) \\x+(3)/(12) =(1)/(3) \\x=(1)/(3) -(3)/(12) \\x=(4)/(12) -(3)/(12) \\x=(1)/(12)
