Given the following quadratic equation:

x^2 + 6x -4 = 0

solve by completing the square (round answers to the nearest hundredth).

^ means to the power. so it’d be x to the power of 2 just in case you didn’t know

x ≈ 0.61, x ≈ - 6.61

Explanation:

Given

x² + 6x - 4 = 0 ( add 4 to both sides )

x² + 6x = 4

To complete the square

add ( half the coefficient of the x- term )² to both sides

x² + 2(3)x + 9 = 4 + 9

(x + 3)² = 13 ( take the square root of both sides )

x + 3 = ±
√(13) ( subtract 3 from both sides )

x = - 3 ±
√(13)

Thus

x = - 3 -
√(13) ≈ - 6.61

x = - 3 +
√(13) ≈ 0.61
