A newspaper did a survey of adults and found that 54% of the population as a whole favored stricter gun control laws. They broke down the results along gender lines and found that 65% of women favored stricter laws while only 44% of men favored them. If a person was selected at random, are the events of being a woman and being in favor of stricter gun control laws dependent or independent?

Answer:

Explanation:

Data Given:

the survey of adults = 54% of the population as a whole favored stricter gun control laws

out of these 54% ;

the women gender lines = 65% favored stricter gun control laws

the men gender lines = 44 % favored

Let the probability of women be:

\mathbf{(n (A \ and \ W))/(n(W)) }

and the probabilty of the men be:

\mathbf{(n (A \ and \ M))/(n(M)) }

If a person was selected at random, the event of being a woman and being favored of stricter gun control laws dependent is dependent because there is higher probability of favoring stricter laws for women than men.
