The Quapaw Indians are native Americans who were also known as the "Arkansas". They lived in four villages situated along the Mississippi river, namely, Kappa, Tongigua, Tourima, and Osotouy (located at the mouth of the Arkansas river). The Louisiana purchase was a very massive purchase of land by the United States government from the French government in 1803. The lands purchased were mostly lands along the Mississippi river, of which the land of the Quapaw Indians was inclusive.
Prior to this purchase, the Quapaw Indians were made up of women who were mostly farmers and men who engaged in hunting of the wild. They thrived in this condition.
After the purchase however, they were affected by flooding which destroyed most of their crops and also caused starvation. They were displaced from their land and most of them squatted near Jefferson county. They eventually returned to Arkansas. While there, they were ill treated by the whites.They eventually rebuilt their land in the Indian territory. Today, they are situated in northeastern Oklahoma.
