Answer:

The duration of the calls is:

  • 18 minutes.
  • 28 minutes.

Explanation:

We can assume that the second call was longer than the first (10 minutes how says in the exercise), then we replace the duration of the calls how is shown below:

  • Duration of the first call = X
  • Duration of the second call = Y

With the information given in the paragraph we can do the next formulas:

  1. X + Y = 46
  2. Y = X + 10 (Because the second call was 10 minutes longer)

We replace the second formula in the first:

  • X + (X + 10) = 46

And we operate:

  • 2X + 10 = 46
  • 2X = 46 - 10
  • 2X = 36
  • X = 36/10
  • X = 18

How the second call was 10 minutes longer than the first, we just add 10 to X and we'll find Y:

  • Y = X + 10
  • Y = 18 + 10
  • Y = 28

And how 18 + 28 = 46, we can be sure that they are the times of the calls.
