There are two types of succession.

Primary Succession - A bare mass of rock developing an ecosystem from scratch. It will use lichens and moss to create soil... a good example of this is a new land mass formed by a volcano.

Secondary Succession - A environment and ecosystem that was destroyed but does not need to start from scratch. It just needs the plants to regrow and attract wildlife back again... a good example of this is a forest destroyed by a wildfire.
