The Mantle and the Crust are different in many ways. The mantle if of course much bigger than the crust, and makes up about 84% of the total volume of the Earth. Also, the Mantle is about 200* C, compared to the 14*C crust. That is a very big difference! Finally, the Mantle controls plate tectonics on the crust, so while they are very different, they still work together.
