There’s a few ways you can do this, you can split the shape into 2 separate shapes, find the areas of each one, then add them. However, I will show a different way. Imagine the section on the bottom left as a piece that was cut out and find the area of that section (the area of the non existing section is
3 x 3 = 9). After, find the area of the entire shape act like the missing section is there you would do 5 x 5 = 25 then you take 25 and subtract 9. Therefore, the answer is 16.

Explanation:

Find the area of the top rectangle

A = l*w

The length is 5 and the width is 5-3 =2

= 5*2

= 10

Then find the area of the bottom rectangle

The length is 2 and the height is 3

A = 3*2 = 6

Sum the areas together

A = 10 +6 = 16
