Another person then took away a quarter of the rest. Later 1 2/5
gallons of water were poured into
the bucket. How much water is in the bucket?

Explanation:

The amount there now is ...

(6 gal)(1 -2/3)(1 -1/4) +1 2/5 gal

= (6 gal)(1/3)(3/4) +1 2/5 gal

= (1 1/2 gal) +(1 2/5 gal)

= (1 5/10 + 1 4/10) gal = 2 9/10 gal

There are 2 9/10 gallons of water in the bucket.
