Why did it take until 1944 for allied to liberate prisoners of concentration camps

I took a test on this and this was the answer. I could be wrong but heres the answer

The reason it took as late as 1944 was because German Defenses still where very strong even though allied troops where advancing. The first camp that was found was in poland in july when Russian troops advanced really fast from the east and the germans tried to hide all evidence that horrible mass murder was happening.
