Chapter #1: Toward the end of Chapter 1: "The Sound of

the Shell” the boys find themselves needing to vote for a
leader. This seems to be an easy vote for most of the boys,
but Piggy hesitates. Ultimately, Piggy does vote for Ralph,
but why did he hesitate in making his decision?

Answer:

Because Ralph makes fun of his name.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • When the boys decided to elect a chief among them through votes, Piggy hesitated at first as he felt that Jack would obviously win the position as the chief.
  • Piggy, however, votes for Ralph grudgingly though he was mad at Ralph for making fun of him earlier and Ralph ultimately becomes their chief.
  • The reason why Piggy hesitated in making his decision was to show that he was mad at Ralph for making fun of his name.
