HELP ME PLEASE! I HAD BEEN ON DIS QUESTION FOR TOO LONG!

Which comparison is correct?

7 < |7|
-5 < -4
|5| > 7
|-5| < -4

Answer:

-5 < -4

|X| - this is read as magnitude of X and it means take the positive of that number X.

meaning if the number X is negative you can ignore the negative and write the positive value of the number.

so now:

|7| = 7

|5| = 5

|-5| = 5

7 = |7| not 7 < |7|

-5 < -4 is correct since on the number line numbers to the left are lesser than numbers on the right and -5 is on the left of -4 on the number line

|5| < 7 since |5| is just 5 and 5 is less than 7

|-5| > -4 not -5 < -4 since |-5| is 5 and 5 is greater than -4

hence correct answer is the second one
