genes are the exon part of a DNA, that encode the protein. in eukaryotic organisms genes are located in the nucleus mainly and in mitochondria or chloroplasts, on the DNA. IN PROKARYOTIC organisms genes are locate in the cytoplasm.

The DNA can be found inside the nucleus of a cell, or in some cases floating around in the cytoplasm, that is only if the cells have no nucleus. The genes can be found inside bundles called chromosomes.
