Owen's birthday cake is a rectangle 12 inches long and 9 inches wide.

It is frosted on the top and on all four sides.
Owen cuts the cake into 3-inch squares.

What is the number of pieces frosted on three sides and the number of pieces frosted on one side?

Answer:

Three sides: 4

One side: 2

Explanation:

Three side frosted would be at the vertices,

So 4

One side would be the ones in the centre, not edges

(12-2(3))×(9-2(3))

6×3

18/3² = 2

Answer:

4 pieces with 3 sides

2 pieces with only the top

Explanation:

First we need to determine how many squares

9/3 = 3

12 /3 = 4

3*4 = 12

There will be 12 pieces of cake

There are 4 corners

They will have frosting on the top and two sides for 3 total sides

There will be 2 pieces will be in the middle with only the top frosted
