Sarah solved a quadratic equation. Her work is shown below, with Step 1 missing.

What could Sarah have written as the result from Step 1?
2(x+1)^2+6=134
Step 1
(x+1)^2=64 Step 2
x+1=8 Step 3
x=-9 or x=7 Step 4
What is step 1?

Answer:

step 1 - subtract 6 from both sides

Explanation:

Given

2(x + 1)² + 6 = 134

Step 1 - subtract 6 from both sides

2(x + 1)² = 128

Step 2 - divide both sides by 2

(x + 1)² = 64

Step 3 - take the square root of both sides

x + 1 = ±
√(64) = ± 8

Step 4 - subtract 1 from both side

x = - 1 ± 8

Step 5 - solve for x

x = - 1 - 8 = - 9 or x = - 1 + 8 = 7
