A triangle has sides with lengths of 6 yards, 14 yards, and 19 yards. Is it a right triangle?

to work this out, you will need to use the Pythagoras theorem. This only works for a right triangle so it will prove if this is a right angle.

Pythagoras Theorem:


a^(2) +b^(2) =c^(2)

a and b are the two smaller sides (6 and 14 yards)

c is the largest side (19 yards)

to calculate this, place the lengths of sides a and b into the equation:


6^(2) + 14^(2) = 232

the formula states that the answer (232) is the length of side c squared. to calculate just the length of c, we need to square root 232.


√(232)=15.23... yards

this is NOT equal to 19 yards (the length of side c) therefore this NOT a right triangle as the Pythagoras theorem only works for right triangles
