Mary wants to make a box. She starts with a piece of cardboard whose length is 15 centimeters and width is 10 centimeters. Then she cuts 4 congruent squares with sides of 3 centimeters at the four corners and folded at the broken lines to make a box.

1) what is the surface area of the box?

2) What is the volume of the box?

3) Explain how you determined the surface area and volume.

Answer:

surface are: 300 cm2

volume: 450cm3

Explanation:

Hi, to answer this question we have to apply the next formulas:

Surface area of a box = 2wl + 2hw + 2 lh

Where w is the width of the box, l is the length of the box, and h is the height of the box.

The top sides and bottom have only length and width, since there is no top side, the surface area is equal to the outer 5 surfaces.

S = wl + 2hw + 2 lh

Replacing with the values given:

S = (15x10)+ 2(3x10)+ 2(15x3)

S = 150+60+90=300 cm2

For the volume we simply apply:

Volume of a rectangular prism: length x width x height

V = 15x10x3 = 450cm3
