Four students were discussing how to find the unit rate for a proportional relationship. Which method is valid?
“Look at the graph of the relationship. Find the y-value of the point that corresponds to x = 1. That value is the unit rate."
"Look at the graph of the relationship. Count the number of units up and the number of units to the right one must move to
arrive at the next point on the graph. Write these two numbers as a fraction."
"Look at the graph of the relationship. Find the x-value of the point that corresponds to y = 2. That value is the unit rate."
"Look at the graph of the relationship. Find two points which have y-values that are one unit apart. The unit rate is the
difference in the corresponding x-values."

Answer:

Look at the graph of the relationship. Count the number of units up and the number of units to the right one must move to arrive at the next point on the graph. Write these two numbers as a fraction.

Explanation:

Unit rate is basically slope, and to find slope, you do rise (up or down) divided by run (right or left). Counting the number of units up and the number of units to the right you need to travel between points and then writing the two numbers as a fraction is how you find slope. Therefore, it is also how you find unit rate.

Slope explained:

Slope is a number (or fraction) you find to see how much a function changes for every unit. Simply put, it's how much you go up or down every time you go one unit to the right.

Ex. A slope of 2 would mean the graph of the relationship would go up 2 units for every 1 unit you went right.

You find slope by dividing how much the relationship goes up or down by how far you went right.

Ex. Went up 2 units and right 3 units. Since the relationship went up 2 units for every 3 units, then it must go up 2/3 for every one unit.
