k) 2^x = 32

Take logs of both sides

log 2^x = log 32

x log 2 = log 32

x = log 32 / log 2 Using your calculator to find the log values:

x = 5.

r) 9^(x + 1) = 81

log 9^(x + 1) = log 81

x + 1 log 9 = log 81

x + 1 = log81 / log9 = 2

x + 1 = 2

x = 1.

The above method is a general way to do these using logs but with some of the simpler ones you don't have to use logs at all:

For example :

3^x = 27

We know that 3^3 is 27 so

3^x = 3^3 and so:

x = 3.
