Jordan bought a poster for his friend as a present and wants to mail it to him. The poster is rolled into a cylindrical shape and has a length of 25 inches. Jordan wants to mail the poster in a box that has a base of 12 inches by 16 inches to accommodate other items he is putting in the box. If Jordan places the poster diagonally into the box, what should be the height of the box so that the poster fits perfectly in the box?

Answer:15 in.

Explanation:

Given

length of poster
L=25\ in.

base of box is
12\ in.* 16\ in.

If Jordan Places the Poster diagonally such that it fits in the box

Suppose the height of the box is h

For poster to be perfect it must be equal to the longest diagonal of box i.e.

L^2=12^2+16^2+h^2

h^2=25^2-12^2-16^2

h^2=625-(144+256)

h^2=625-400

h^2=225

h=15\ in.
