(1)/(4)x + 2 = -3 + (1)/(2) x

First, we will take
(1)/(4)x to the right hand side of the equation, and -3 to the left hand side. In doing so, their signs will change (that is, they will be subtracted from the side that they are moved to).

2 -(-3) =
(1)/(2) x - (1)/(4) x

2 + 3 =
(1)/(4)x

(1)/(4) x = 5

Now, we will multiply both sides by 4, so as to find x.

(1)/(4) x x 4 = 5 x 4

x = 20

Therefore, x = 20.
