A pole that is 3.2 meters tall casts a shadow that is 1.18 meters long. At the same time, a nearby tower casts a shadow that is 42.25 meters long. How tall is the tower? Round answer to the nearest tenth.​

Explanation:

If you draw out the poles and shadows, you can connect the end of the shadow to the top of the pole. This creates two traingles that are proportional. This allows you to set up the proportion:

3.2 m / 1.18 m = x / 42.25 m

You can then cross multiple and get:

1.18x = (3.2)(42.25)

1.18x = 135.2

You can then divide and solve for x.

x = 114.6 m

X is a variable for the height of the taller pole, so you can simply add units and thats the height.
