Francesca wants to buy a package of balloons. She has $35.42 and each package costs $8.36. About how many packages of balloons can Francesca buy? (Round to the nearest dollar.)

Francesca can buy 4 packages of balloons for $34.

Explanation:

35.42 x 100 = 3542 ÷2 = 1771

8.36 x 100 = 836 ÷2 = 418

1771 ÷ 418 = 4.236842105263158 (We will round it to 4.23)

If we round it to 5, it will exceed Francesca's budget, so we will make 4.23 4.

4 x 8.36 = $33.44

We cannot cut the 44 cents so we will round it to $34.
