PLEASEEE HELPPP!!!

How is the quote “I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the Hersey of rain.” a metaphor?? Please explain!!

When Doodle dies, he is being compared to the scarlet ibis, who died in a similar way. This creates a connection between the reader and the characters. Another example of figurative language within “The Scarlet Ibis” that creates a dismal tone can be found when James uses hyperboles to exaggerate his strong feelings.
