Lets say the hat cost $100

x=100

multiplying 100 by 20% which is .20 yields $20

S0 $20 is the discount which we subtract from the original price

100-20 and get the sale price of $80

They use a shortcut so you don't have to do the subtracting of the discount

They say if the price is being discounted subtract the discount from 1 and multiply that by the original amount

So in this case the discount percent was 20% = .20

Subtracted from 1

1-.20=.80

Since x is the original price we multiply x by the .80 to get

.80x
