Explanation:

1) Cut off the triangles and solve for the area of the rectangle.

12 m x 4 m = 48m

2) Now that we have the big area of the rectangle, we just have to solve for the 2 triangles on the ends. Of the 18 m at the top, we uses 12 m to make the rectangle. That means there are 6 m that was not incorporated in the rectangle. Since there are 2 triangles, we can conclude that the base of each triangle is 3. Now we just have to use the equation for a triangle to find the area.

4 m x 3 m x 1/2 = 6m (each triangle = 6m)

3) Add up all of the values to get the complete area

48m + 6m + 6m = 60 m2
