Side of shaded square = 3 in

Area of shaded square = side * side = 3 * 3 = 9 square inches

5 shaded square so we multiply the area by 5

Total area of shaded square = 9 * 5 = 45 square inches

Next the area of shaded triangle

Base of shaded triangle = 6 in

Height of shaded triangle = 6 in

Area of shaded triangle = 1/2 x base x height = 1/2 x 6 x 6 = 18

4 shaded triangles so we multiply the area by 4

Total area of shaded triangle = 18 * 4= 72 square inches

Area of shaded triangle + area of shaded square
