Most of the battles (except for a couple), were fought on the Southern home field. This allowed for easier transportation for the South (as they were fairly agriculture and had little to no up-to-date transportation), but with Northern advancement, it lead to a detriment in the destruction of their few transportation routes.

Also, many well-known military leaders resigned from the U.S. army, to fight for their home state. These include but are not limited too Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and many others. They trained together with many of their Northern compatriots, and knew each other quite well.
