Read the narrative. The paragraph numbers are for reference.
(1) I was half-listening to the guide's instructions as he warned us, "Be careful when you get to the third rapids. There's a whirlpool just before the rapids that can be really tricky. Make sure you paddle hard before you get to the whirlpool, and then paddle around it quickly, or else it'll pull you in."
(2) Yeah, right, I thought. I've done this before - no big deal! If only I had listened more carefully.
(3) As we neared the third rapids, my friend Robert, who was in the kayak next to me, yelled "Remember what the guide said!" "Yeah!" I called back. However, I felt confident that I didn't need the guide to tell me what to do.
(4) I spied the whirlpool ahead, but it didn't look too bad in fact, I was sure I could paddle right through it. So, moving straight ahead, I paddled my hardest right into the whirlpool, its foaming waters swirling menacingly.
(5) The next thing I knew, my kayak was floating through the rapids, and I am gasping for air and flailing my arms wildly, trying to get Robert's attention while the whirlpool wrapped me in its grasp.
(6) Robert, while trying to avoid the pull of the whirlpool, held out his paddle to me. As the waters whipped around me, I grabbed the paddle and held on for dear life, thankful that someone had been paying attention during the guide's speech. Thanks to Robert's help, I freed myself from the churning waters and swam to the bank of the river. I let out a relieved sigh when I spotted my kayak ahead, just past the rapids, it's gateway impeded by a large rock.
What change should be made to the first sentence of paragraph 4?

I spied the whirlpool ahead, but it didn't look too bad in fact. I was sure I could paddle right through it.

I spied the whirlpool ahead, but it didn't look too bad; in fact, I was sure I could paddle right through it.

I spied the whirlpool ahead, but it didn't look too bad in fact and I was sure I could paddle right through it.
