The area of the figure below is when you add the area of each recognizable shape that makes up the figure.

From the figure I can recognize 4 squares and quarter of a circle into 4 places.

The radius of the circle is 2 unit while the sides of the square is also 2 units.

Area of the squares

area = L²

area = 2² = 4

area for 4 squares = 4 × 4 = 16 units²

Area of the quarter circles.

area = πr²/4

area = π × 2²/4 = 4π/4 = π

area of the 4 quarter circles = 4π = 4 × 3.14 = 12.56 units²

Area of the figure = 16 + 12.56 = 28.56 units²
