- x + y = 8 → (1)

y + 3x = 12 → (2)

Subtracting (2) from (1) term by term will eliminate the term in y, that is

(- x - 3x) + (y - y) = (8 - 12)

- 4x = - 4 ( divide both sides by - 4 )

x = 1

Substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

Substituting in (2)

y + 3(1) = 12

y + 3 = 12 ( subtract 3 from both sides )

y = 9

Solution is (1, 9 )
