Charlie and Andy are driving towards a new ocean resort. Charlie's car is 20 miles west of the resort traveling at 40 mph while Andy's car is 45 miles north of the resort traveling at 60 mph. The situation is shown in the following illustration.Which of the following functions gives the distance, D(t), between the two cars, t hours from the ocean resort?

Answer:

At time t hours,

D(t) = √(5200t²)

Explanation:

Charlies car is travelling at 40 miles/h while andy's car is travelling at 60 miles/h.

Now, distance = speed x time

Thus;

At a time t, the distance, covered by Charlie's car will be;

D1 = 40t

Similarly, At a time t, the distance, covered by Andy's car will be;

D2 = 60t

Using Pythagoras theorem,

D² = (40t)² + (60t)²

D² = 1600t² + 3600t²

D² = 5200t²

D = √(5200t²)
