First we want to remove the parentheses so

4x + 3 - (x-1)

4x + 3 -x +1 The signs changed because of the negative sign that was distributed in the parentheses

now arrange them

4x - x + 3 + 1

Now solve

4x - x = 3x

3 + 1 = 4

The answer is 3x + 4
