MONDAY: Benny is standing on a raised platform when he throws a baseball upward. The function h(t) = -16^2 + 35t + 23 represents the motion of the ball in the air where h(t) is the height of the ball from the

ground at time t after it is released. Which of the following would be a
reasonable height of the platform? *
O 16 feet
O 35 feet
O 17 feet
O 33.5 feet

Answer:

17 feet

Explanation:

For this problem, you don't even need the vertex to solve -- all you need to do is subtract possible answers from the initial height!

Since we know benny is standing on the platform -- we can determine that the actual height of the platform will be less than 23 -- this rules out B and D.

Now we can simply subtract 23 from the last 2 possible answers to get Benny's height!

23-17=6\\23-16=7

The problem asks for a reasonable height. It isn't reasonable to assume that Benny is 7 feet tall! Which means that Benny is most likely 6 feet tall and the height of the platform is 17!
